What is the CryptoWall Virus and How to Protect Against It

Sadly, computer viruses are a part of our computer reality today. New viruses appear regularly that attack and disable computers worldwide. If you use Windows and are not properly protected, then it’s time to wake up and get protected. The CryptoWall virus is no joke.

ransomThe predecessor of the CryptoWall virus was CryptoLocker. Both are still active and poised to strike both enterprises and consumers alike. To remove CryptoWall is extremely difficult as it has been classified as one of the Trojan Horses that are able to mask their viral payloads via seemingly non-threatening programs and applications. When CryptoWall hits, it encrypts the files on infected PCs and follows up with a call for money in order to get a ‘decryption’ key. It sort of holds users up for ransom.

Because they hold your PC up for ransom, these types of viruses are commonly referred to as ‘ransomeware’. Their intent is to get money to correct the malfunction they have caused. Those who choose to pay can download and run their ‘correction’ program application file that will clean up the virus. It decrypts what they have encrypted, returning the computer back to its normal state.

Nobody knows where this virus comes from, at least not yet. It does, however, come to people via emails as an attachment, and it piggybacks on certain program and application downloads. You can also pick it up from a few advertising sites that many people visit.

The Way it Works

While CrypoWall is infecting your computer, it establishes a network connection pointed at random servers. It uses this connection to upload connection information from your PC, like IP address, System Information, and Location.

Now the remote server generates its own random 2048-bit RSA Key-pair which is associated with your PC. It copies this public key to the PC and starts copying each individual file on its already pre-determined list of available supported file extensions. While the copy is being created, it is encrypted using that public key, and your original file is deleted off your hard drive.

This process continues until all your files that match the supported file extension types are copied and encrypted. It also includes files located on other drives, like network shares and external drives. It will attack any drive assigned to one of your letter drives and add it to the list. It also affects files on your drive that are stored in cloud-based storage. As the files change on the PC, they will also propogate up to the cloud.

If you decide to pay the ransom, you are still not out of the woods. They ask for you to pay this in Bitcoin. This can be a real headache for anyone who wants to pay the ransom.

How to Protect Yourself

The best thing you can do to protect yourself from this type of attack is to backup your current files. Backup everything on a regular basis. This is the most effective way for you to recover your files. You should always have a good antivirus and a good malware detector actively running on your computer, and keep them constantly updated.

Do not open email attachments from anyone you don’t know and trust. Have a backup of your files, a good up-to-date antivirus and malware detector, and you will be in good shape to defend yourself against this malicious behavior.
